Most homes here use heat pumps - we know them inside out.
About 80% of homes we service in Gainesville and the surrounding area use heat pumps with electric backup heat strips. They are efficient down to about 35°F, then the strips kick in. Most heating problems we see are either: refrigerant low (reduces efficiency before total failure), defrost cycle stuck, or backup heat strip sequencer fault. We have specific experience with the equipment in your area.
Heat pump diagnosis with proper refrigerant gauges, not guesswork
Defrost cycle testing in cold weather (most contractors skip this)
Either the system is in defrost cycle (normal, lasts 5-10 minutes during cold weather) or the reversing valve has failed and isn't switching to heat mode. If cold air persists more than 15 minutes, call us - we can usually diagnose over the phone.
How long should a heat pump last in Florida?
Florida is actually rough on heat pumps because they run 8+ months a year for cooling. Average life: 10-15 years with regular maintenance, 8-12 without. The Eagle Care Plan tune-ups add an average of 4-6 years.
My power bill jumped during cold weather - normal?
Yes - electric backup heat strips are 3x more expensive to run than the heat pump itself. When temps drop below ~35°F, the strips kick in. Brief cold snaps will spike your bill. If it's chronic, your heat pump may not be reaching set point and the strips are running constantly - we can test that.
Should I get a furnace or stick with a heat pump?
For most Gainesville-area homes, heat pump with electric backup is the right answer - we just don't get cold enough often enough to justify a gas furnace investment. Exceptions: homes with existing gas service and very tight envelopes can pencil out for furnace.
Cold front coming and the heat is acting up?
Don't wait for it to fully fail at 30 degrees. Schedule a tune-up or repair now.
