Quick answer: Different AC noises mean different things – some are normal, some need attention this week, and some require shutting the system off NOW. This guide walks through the most common AC sounds we diagnose at Eagle AC, what each one likely means, and how urgent it is.

If you’re hearing something that doesn’t fit the categories below, give us a call – we can often diagnose over the phone and tell you whether it’s worth a same-day visit.

1. Banging, clanking, or thunking

Likely cause: Loose part inside the blower or compressor, broken fan blade, or a failing compressor.
Urgency: Shut it off and call us. Running an AC that’s banging will turn a $300 fan motor replacement into a $2,500 compressor replacement very quickly.
What to expect: A diagnostic visit will identify the source. If it’s a loose part or a fan blade, often a same-day fix. If it’s compressor failure on an older system, we’ll discuss repair vs replacement.

2. Squealing or screeching

Likely cause: Belt issue (rare in modern direct-drive systems), failing motor bearings, or in heat pumps, a refrigerant pressure issue.
Urgency: Schedule within 1-3 days. The squealing usually means a bearing is going – it’ll get worse and louder until the motor fails completely.
Cost range: $250-$700 for blower motor replacement, $400-$900 for outdoor unit motor.

3. Buzzing or humming (no fan running)

Likely cause: Failed capacitor, contactor stuck open, or thermostat issue. The system is trying to start but can’t.
Urgency: Schedule today or tomorrow. If you can hear humming but the AC isn’t cooling, shut it off – the humming itself can damage the compressor over time.
Cost range: $150-$300 for most capacitor or contactor replacements.

4. Clicking

Likely cause: Single click at startup is normal (the contactor engaging). Repeated clicking with no fan response means something is preventing the system from starting – thermostat, capacitor, or controller fault.
Urgency: Schedule today. Repeated start attempts wear the compressor.
Cost range: $150-$450 depending on which component.

5. Hissing or whistling

Likely cause: Refrigerant leak (the loudest hissing), or a duct air leak (more whistle-like).
Urgency: Refrigerant leak – schedule this week. Duct leak – any time, it’s just costing you efficiency.
Cost range: $300-$800 to find and seal a refrigerant leak plus refrigerant; $150-$400 for duct sealing.

6. Gurgling or bubbling

Likely cause: Refrigerant flow issue – either low refrigerant or a stuck expansion valve. Often heard from indoor unit.
Urgency: Schedule this week. If the AC is also not cooling well, schedule sooner.
Cost range: $300-$1,200 depending on cause.

7. Rattling at the start of every cycle

Likely cause: Loose panel on outdoor unit, debris in the fan, or internal vibration from a failing component.
Urgency: If a panel is loose, often you can tighten it with a screwdriver yourself. If it’s internal, schedule within a week.
Cost range: $0 if it’s just a loose panel, $250-$500 if internal.

8. High-pitched whining or screaming

Likely cause: High refrigerant pressure – this is dangerous to the compressor.
Urgency: Shut it off NOW and call us. High-pressure damage to a compressor is one of the most expensive HVAC repairs.
Cost range: Diagnostic only at this stage. Compressor failure can be $1,500-$3,500.

What’s normal

Some sounds are perfectly normal and don’t need diagnosis:

What to do when you hear something new

  1. Take note of when it happens – at startup? While running? Only during cooling? Only during heating? This helps us diagnose.
  2. Check the obvious – is the filter clean? Is the outdoor unit clear of debris?
  3. Don’t run a system that’s making aggressive noises – banging, screaming, repeated clicking. Shut it off and call us.
  4. Call us with a description – we can often tell you over the phone whether it’s worth a service visit and what the likely cost will be.
